Nebraska football saw a long draft streak end last year, but it has started again with the selection of defensive tackle Khalil Davis, who was chosen by the Buccaneers at pick 194.

It’s a bit surprising to see Khalil Davis go off the board first for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, as Lamar Jackson seemed more likely to fall into that role, but Davis is first off the board and with that, so begins a new draft streak for the Huskers.

Davis spent five years in Lincoln with the Cornhuskers and was a tremendous player in 2019. He had eight sacks in his final year at Nebraska while also recording 44 tackles (11 for loss). He was one of the most exciting players on Nebraska’s defense, but it might not translate to the pros.

As noted by The Draft Network, Davis very much has a boom or bust label attached to him. With the right system, he can flourish at the professional level, but otherwise, he could be out of the league rather quickly. To be fair though, that tends to be the case with most sixth round draft picks.

Tampa Bay should be a fun team to watch in 2020, as they brought in Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. Davis is on the other side of the ball and that side is pretty nasty, especially when it comes to stopping the run. They were one of the best at that last year, but Davis can hopefully be another rotational player that can be slotted in and able to rush the quarterback.

The Bucs play in the quarterback-laden NFC South and have to face Drew Brees and Matt Ryan each twice a year. Davis will certainly be licking his chops trying to get after those two and this should be a good fit for the Huskers defensive lineman.

Next off the board for Nebraska should be Lamar Jackson, but for now, Khalil Davis is off to the NFL and is the newest member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Congrats Khalil!
