Chiefs News: L’Jarius Sneed adds blazing speed to secondary
Chiefs news highlights the latest addition to the Kansas City Chiefs and it’s L’Jarius Sneed of Louisiana Tech.
The Kansas City Chiefs have made their fourth round pick and it’s L’Jarius Sneed out of Louisiana Tech. Sneed spent the first three years of his career as a cornerback and played safety in his fourth and final year.
That kind of versatility is going to be big for the Chiefs and could be how they plan to replace the production of Kendall Fuller, who bolted this offseason for Washington. Fuller had been playing as a safety in some defensive packages and that helped the Chiefs secondary immensely when Juan Thornhill went down.
With Sneed, not only are the Chiefs getting a versatile player, but also a speedy one. As the pick was made, Trey Wingo said Sneed was blazing fast and seems to fit right into what this defense wants to do moving forward.
Daniel Jeremiah said he could be used as a press corner, brut again, the versatility is good for this defense who turned things around immensely in 2019 en route to their Super Bowl win.
Here’s what Joe Marino of The Draft Network had to say about Sneed,
"At the next level, Sneed could be a zone safety or press corner but there is development needed in either role. Where Sneed does win is with his speed, ball skills and aggressive mentality. With that said, developing his coverage instincts and ability to diagnose routes quicker is critical. Sneed is a versatile, high-end developmental prospect that should get a chance to stick if he can carve out a role on special teams given his athletic profile and flashes of playmaking ability."
Safety might not have been a huge need for the Chiefs, but as it’s been mentioned in this piece, Sneed is probably going to be used as more of a corner in this defense. The versatility, speed, and athletic ability he possesses gives him tremendous upside and adding talent for the secondary is always a smart idea for any team.
Teams in the AFC West have bolstered their offense in this draft, so the Chiefs need to make sure they upgrade at defense in order to help slow those teams down (even if they won’t be as good as the Chiefs’ Legion of Zoom).
What do you think of this pick, Chiefs Kingdom? Do you have high hopes for L’Jarius Sneed?
