KC Chiefs: Grading AFC West 2020 NFL Draft first round picks
- With the 32nd pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select, Clyde Edwards-Helaire – Running Back, LSU
How can the KC Chiefs improve on perfection, you ask? By giving another weapon to Patrick Mahomes, of course.
It was assumed by most that the Chiefs would address a very much improved defense, for they are in need of a linebacker or cornerback. As usual, the Chiefs surprise everyone by snagging one of the best- if not THE best – running backs in the draft in Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Edwards-Helaire was a member of the 2019 National Champion LSU Tigers, pounding the rock for Joe Burrow and defeating Clemson in the title game. Edwards-Helair is not a huge guy, but he is deceptively fast.
During his college career, typically the first tackler would miss, and the second, and the third. In fact when he ran against my OU Sooners, 11 tacklers missed at one point. Not only is he an illusive and powerful runner, he is a threat to catch passes out of the back field.
The Chiefs certainly still have some defensive needs that need to be addressed, and the offensive line could use some work as well, but with the Chiefs primary back being Damien Williams, Darrel Williams being a question mark, and Darwin Thompson serving as more of a third down back, Chiefs fans should be excited about the addition of an every down back like Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
I give the Chiefs an A for surprising all of us with this selection.

Even though no one really thought the KC Chiefs would take a running back at 32, they did it and they got who could be their next franchise running back. Once the Chiefs can get back to pounding the rock again, their offense will be even deadlier and that should terrify their AFC West foes.
