The Kansas City Chiefs got back in the win column against the Cardinals and continued their NFC West slate, heading to Seattle in week 12 of the 2010 season. How would this 6-4 Chiefs team fare against a 5-5 Seahawks squad?

It was nice to see the Kansas City Chiefs win again, as they blew out the struggling Arizona Cardinals last week. Next up was a date with the Seahawks, who were sitting right at .500 midway through the 2010 season.

This wouldn’t be an easy game, as playing on the road in Seattle never is easy. The Chiefs knew this all too well, as these two teams were in the same division for years prior to the league’s realignment in the early 2000s.

How would this game go for Kansas City, who struggled on the road in 2010?

WEEK 12 VS SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: NOVEMBER 28TH, 2010

This game got off to as good a start as possible for the Chiefs, as the offense marched  down the field and found the end zone on their first possession. It was 7-0 Chiefs just like that and made it seven straight games where Dwayne Bowe scored a touchdown. He truly did have a great season in 2010.

The Chiefs attempted a field goal on their next possession, but it was blocked and Ryan Succop wisely kicked the ball out of bounds so that the Seahawks couldn’t pick it up and return it for six points.

Unfortunately, special teams continued to be an issue for Kansas City, as after they were forced to punt on their third possession, the punt was blocked and it was returned for a touchdown, tying the game at seven. Yikes.

It took the Chiefs until midway through the second quarter to find the end zone again and the Chiefs should have been up 17-0, but their special teams had cost them big. Seattle hadn’t even recorded a first down at this point of the game. That would change on their next possession even though they didn’t get any points off of it.

Dwayne Bowe struck again, finding the end zone with 1:12 remaining in the half to put KC up 21-7. It should have been 24-0, but once again, it had been a rough half for special teams.

The final two minutes of the first half drug by FOREVER, as the Seahawks were trying to get something going and the Chiefs defense picked off the football. A few plays later, Jamaal Charles fumbled and Seattle got the ball right back and kicked a field goal to make it 21-10 heading into the locker room. More importantly for Seattle, they’d get the ball to start the second half.

Right off the bat, the Seahawks made a huge play down the field and were set up in the red zone. Two plays later, Seattle made it a four-point game after starting off sluggishly on offense. This had the makings of a close game midway through the third quarter, but it would be mostly all Chiefs the rest of the way.

Kansas City’s offense got rolling in the fourth quarter, scoring three touchdowns and holding the Seahawks to just one touchdown, winning it 42-24 and moving to 7-4 on the year.

REMEMBER THAT GUY?

  • Earl Thomas – a rookie in 2010 – was the one who returned the blocked punt for six points.
  • I just noticed during this game that Verran Tucker wore number 15. It’s weird seeing a non-legend wearing that jersey.
  • Matt Hasselbeck was the Seahawks quarterback.
  • The Chiefs had some trickery, giving the ball to defensive end Shaun Smith for a rushing touchdown in the first half.
  • Ben Obomanu had one of the Seahawks touchdowns while grabbing five catches for 159 yards.

Matt Cassel had a brilliant game, going 22 of 32 for 233 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions, making it three straight games with no picks thrown by the Chiefs quarterback. The Chiefs run game was dominant with Jamaal Charles rushing for 173 yards off of 22 carries and finding the end zone once while Thomas Jones had 68 yards rushing.

Dwayne Bowe continued his impressive season, hauling in 13 receptions for 170 yards and THREE touchdowns. He was sensational in 2010 and rewatching these games has reminded me of how talented he was. It’s just a bummer that didn’t carryover into the future seasons.

This game might have had 42 Chiefs points, but it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that things got going and fans could let out a sigh of relief. The win put them at 7-4 and they got their second road win of the 2010 season.
