The Kansas City Chiefs dropped a game to division rival Oakland in overtime and now had a chance to bounce back against another division rival – Denver. Would the Chiefs be able to move to 6-3?

The loss to the Raiders wasn’t a great look for the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs. Even though they had already won more games than they did in all of the 2009 season, losing to Oakland is never fun.

The Chiefs had another chance to take on a division rival in week ten, this time against the Denver Broncos who were not having a good season. The Broncos had won just two games and were looking to be on their way to a high draft pick in 2011.

With that said, any time two divisional teams face off, the records can be thrown out the window. How would this game go down for the 5-3 Kansas City Chiefs and 2-6 Denver Broncos?

WEEK 10 VS DENVER BRONCOS: NOVEMBER 14TH, 2010

The best way to describe this game for the Kansas City Chiefs is ugly. Aside from putting up 29 points, the Chiefs defense simply couldn’t stop a Broncos offense that had been pretty putrid up to that point.

Denver scored 49 points en route to a 20-point blowout and made people watching think the records for each team should have been flip flopped.

It had the makings of an ugly game early on, as the Broncos scored three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. Clearly Denver remembered the Chiefs coming into Mile High Stadium and ruining their playoff hopes the season prior. They continued pouring it on after that, leading 35-10 at half time.

The Chiefs scored 19 points in the  second half, but when it came down to it, that three touchdown first quarter Denver had was the ultimate blow. This game truly was over before it began because while yes, this Chiefs offense could be lethal, they relied heavily on their run game and when they were down 21-0 out of the gate, running the ball wasn’t an option.

Jamaal Charles had just 41 yards rushing while Jackie Battle had more than Thomas Jones during this game. Matt Cassel had one hell of a game, throwing the ball 53 times (!!!!), completing 33 of those for 469 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions while getting sacked four times. It was an impressive game for Cassel, but the Chiefs offense couldn’t come from behind because they were at their best when their run game could be set loose.

Dwayne Bowe also had a career kind of game, grabbing 13 passes for 186 yards and finding the end zone twice. This 2010 season truly was a special one for Bowe and it’s a shame we only got to see him do this in one season.

REMEMBER THAT GUY?

  • Terrance Copper had five catches for 55 yards.
  • After grabbing an impressive touchdown the week prior, Verran Tucker didn’t find the end zone this week, but he had one reception for 38 yards.
  • Chris Chambers scored a touchdown for the Chiefs. Chambers had been one of the bigger talents at wideout in 2009, but he didn’t get the same kind of attention in 2010.
  • Kyle Orton threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns for Denver.
  • The Broncos had a lot of different players score touchdowns including the one and only TIM TEBOW!!!!
  • Jason Hunter had a 75 yard fumble return for a touchdown.
  • Mario Haggan had three of the four sacks on Cassel.

After starting the season 3-0, the Chiefs sat at 5-4 and all four losses had come on the road. Losing in overtime the week before sucked, but at least the Chiefs made it a close game. This one was over from the moment Denver scored their third touchdown in the first freaking quarter.

The good news is that the Kansas City Chiefs would be heading back to Arrowhead the next week and would be facing their second NFC West opponent of the season. Hopefully they were able to bounce back because they were losing their lead in the AFC West.
