The Kansas City Chiefs were 5-2 heading into a big match-up against the Oakland Raiders. How did this game go?

After winning just four games in 2009, the Kansas City Chiefs already totaled more wins through just seven games. In order to move to 6-2, they’d have to win against a Raiders team who was doing well through the first eight weeks of the season, sitting 4-4 on the year.

The Chiefs narrowly beat a winless Bills squad last week. Would that be enough to motivate them to go into the Black Hole and smash the Raiders in the mouth?

Let’s find out in the first Chiefs/Raiders game of the 2010 season.

WEEK 9 VS OAKLAND RAIDERS: NOVEMBER 7TH, 2010

After rushing for over 200 yards in their past three games, the Chiefs totaled just 85 yards rushing in this one. That proved to be a major difference, as it forced Matt Cassel to throw the ball 35 times and no one wants Cassel throwing the ball 35 times. He completed 20 passes for 216 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

The Raiders, meanwhile, had 112 rushing yards with most of the damage coming from Darren McFadden who had 89 – more than Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones had combined.

The Chiefs were able to hold the Raiders scoreless in the first half while putting up ten points prior to half time, but the Raiders offense got going in the third quarter. They scored two touchdowns while the Chiefs added a field goal, making it a 14-13 Oakland lead.

The Chiefs led 20-17 late in the game, but Oakland was able to march down the field and kick a field goal to tie things up. That sent Kansas City to overtime for the second straight week.

This time the Chiefs weren’t so lucky, however, as the Raiders made it into field goal range with just one 47 yard pass down the field. With Sebastian Janikowski‘s leg in its prime, they were able to knock through the game winning field goal and hand the Chiefs their third loss of the season.

This was an annoying game, but mostly because it was a loss to the Raiders. The win allowed the Raiders to move to 5-4 and give them a fighting chance to win the division, as they had as many wins as KC after the final whistle blew.

Cassel played okay, throwing two touchdown passes, but when his run game couldn’t carry the offense, fans saw he couldn’t carry the team. He was also sacked three times, which didn’t help when trying to air the ball out.

Dropping to 1-1 in the division was unfortunate, but the Chiefs had a chance to bounce back in week ten against another AFC West rival – Once again, it’d come on the road.

REMEMBER THAT GUY?

  • Jason Campbell was the Raiders quarterback and did well in this game. He threw for 229 yards, one touchdown, and one pick while getting sacked four times.
  • Eric Berry had two of the four sacks. A safety getting two sacks, wow!
  • Tamba Hali and Wallace Gilberry had the other two sacks.
  • Rock Cartwright had one carry for two yards for the Raiders.
  • Jacoby Ford absolutely torched the Chiefs, grabbing six catches for 148 yards and had the big time catch in overtime to put the Raiders in field goal range. He also had a 96 yard kickoff return to start the second half.
  • Verran Tucker had one catch for 11 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs. He had quite the grab in the back of the end zone to put the Chiefs on the board in the second quarter.
  • Khalif Barnes had a touchdown reception for Oakland.

Chiefs and Raiders games are usually fun no matter what the records are, but this game was actually between two teams with at least .500 records. The Raiders looked good in this one and were an absolute thorn in the side of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010.
