KC Chiefs News: Brett Veach continues to keep band together
KC Chiefs news consists of Bashaud Breeland re-signing with the team and how Brett Veach is doing a nice job of keeping the Super Bowl winning roster together.
The Kansas City Chiefs started free agency off on a slow note, but Brett Veach has made moves since then and has done a particularly good job at bringing back players from last year’s team. Most recently, he signed Bashaud Breeland to a one-year deal.
Breeland rejoining the team is huge because it means that cornerback is no longer a necessity in the first round of the draft, but can potentially wait to be addressed on day two. It definitely needs to be addressed in the draft, but Breeland paired with Charvarius Ward is better than Ward and Rashad Fenton.
Veach also has retained Mike Pennel, Demarcus Robinson, Anthony Sherman, and restructured Sammy Watkins‘ contract. Pennel was crucial in the run defense’s woes while Robinson, Sherman, and Watkins keep the offense strong. Chad Henne is also back and while he didn’t suit up in 2019, the organization clearly trusts him as Patrick Mahomes‘ backup for another year while prepping Jordan Ta’amu for that role past 2020.

It’s been great seeing Veach pull back in some key free agents from the Super Bowl winning team. While Breeland had his frustrating moments in 2019, he was a game changer and proved that with his key interception in Super Bowl LIV.
The fact that Breeland didn’t receive a lot of attention on the open market is puzzling (especially when looking at the contract Kendall Fuller got from Washington), but hey – No complaints here. Chiefs Kingdom will gladly take Bashaud Breeland back and this now helps the team out come draft time.
There’s still some names to keep an eye on in free agency, but Brett Veach has had a sneaky good offseason to this point. Here’s to hoping he does just as well in the 2020 NFL Draft.
