The KC Chiefs re-signed another member of their 2019 Super Bowl winning roster. This time, it’s Bashaud Breeland rejoining the band, and this is huge for the 2020 secondary.

All offseason long, there’s been speculation over where Bashaud Breeland might land in free agency. Now we have the answer and that’s right back with the Kansas City Chiefs for another season.

Breeland and the Chiefs agreed to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million and this is a big time move for the Super Bowl champs. With this move, cornerback is still a need this offseason, but it’s no longer a crucial need.

With Breeland back in Chiefs red, he, Charvarius Ward, and Rashad Fenton will be the main corners in the KC secondary. The Chiefs should definitely still look to draft a cornerback in the 2020 NFL Draft, but it’s no longer a “first round necessity” like it was prior to this signing.

Bashaud Breeland had his fair share of stupid penalties that had Chiefs fans pulling their hair out, but when push came to shove, the guy made plays. He had an interception in the Super Bowl that will be remembered forever and his 100 yard fumble recovery against Detroit in week four showed what a heads up kind of player Breeland can be.

Brett Veach and the Chiefs have made it a point to fill the holes this offseason and a lot of those holes have been filled with players who played  those positions the season prior. Breeland now joins Mike Pennel, Anthony Sherman, Demarcus Robinson, and (to a point) Sammy Watkins, all of whom were expected to potentially be somewhere else in 2020, but are now going to don that Chiefs red for one more year.

Bringing back Breeland was smart because he has experience in this secondary and helped turn things around to get them to the Super Bowl and win the whole darn thing. It also opens things up a little more and doesn’t make cornerback as big of a necessity in the early rounds of the draft.

Don’t get me wrong – The Kansas City Chiefs should still definitely draft a cornerback, but it no longer has to be in the first round now. Instead, they can wait until Day 2 to find a corner to pair with Breeland and Ward.

Even though this is only a one-year deal, the Chiefs were smart to wait things out and see how things panned out for Breeland on the open market. Now he’s back in Kansas City in the hopes of capturing a second straight title.
