The Kansas City Chiefs dropped two straight games after starting the season 3-0. They’d return home to Arrowhead in week seven for a date with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 2010 season started much better than the 2009 season did, as the Kansas City Chiefs were close to their entire win total from the season prior after just three games into the season. They hit a roadblock in weeks five and six, however, and hoped to bounce back in week seven against the Jaguars.

The Chiefs hoped to get back in the win column against the Jaguars who were without their starting quarterback and they were asking a guy who hadn’t played since the 2005 season to fill in at quarterback for this game.

The Jaguars handled the Chiefs in 2009 and throughout the history between these two teams (winning six of eight games), but this was an improved Kansas City squad. How would this week seven game turn out?

WEEK 7 VS JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: OCTOBER 24TH, 2010

The teams traded punts to start though Dexter McCluster had a couple of big runs that netted first downs for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was crazy how big of a role he played in that 2010 offense and it’s even crazier how quickly he flamed out after his impressive rookie season.

After the Jaguars punted, the Chiefs recovered a fumble on the punt return (what was looking to be a big one too) and got the ball for a second straight drive. One play later, Thomas Jones took the handoff to the four-yard line and set the Chiefs up in a goal to go situation. Jamaal Charles scored on the very next play to put KC up 7-0 in the first quarter.

Despite having a quarterback who they had just signed the previous Tuesday, the Jaguars were moving the ball well. They took the lead in the second quarter and it started to feel like maybe the Chiefs defense wasn’t as good as it had looked through the first month of the season.

The Chiefs took the lead on a Jones touchdown with a minute and a half to go in the half. The Jags would once again march down the field in the final minute and made it a one point game in favor of KC at half time.

Kansas City got off to as great of a start as possible to kick off the second half with Matt Cassel connecting with Dwayne Bowe down the field and Bowe then taking it into the end zone. That touchdown gave Kansas City a 21-13 lead.

The Jaguars matched the Chiefs’ opening drive with a touchdown of their own, but definitely had some help from the officials. The KC defense hadn’t been playing well throughout the game, but fortunately, this would be the last touchdown they’d surrender to the backup quarterback-led Jags.

That was where the game turned around, as Derrick Johnson had a pick six and it was all Chiefs the rest of the way. They’d score two more touchdowns and prevented Jacksonville from scoring again for the duration of the game. Kansas City not only matched their home win totals from the previous two seasons in just three home games, but they already matched their total wins from 2009 just seven weeks into the season.

With this victory, the Kansas City Chiefs were 4-2 and their offense showed when it got clicking, it was tough to slow down. An interception by the Chiefs defense in the final minutes clinched the game and put the Chiefs back in the win column.

REMEMBER THAT GUY?

  • Todd Bouman was the starting quarterback for the Jaguars. He had not started an NFL game since week 17 of the 2005 season, but actually played well in this game, especially through the first half. He struggled in the second half though and once he went downhill, that was all she wrote for the Jags.
  • Jackie Battle had a touchdown run! Yay Jackie Battle!

Dwayne Bowe was the star of this game, hauling in two touchdowns for the second straight week and totaling 81 yards off of three catches. Two of his three catches were for touchdowns. Matt Cassel’s numbers weren’t eye popping, but he had no interceptions for the second straight week while throwing for two touchdowns.

The run game continued to be dominant with Jones rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown and Charles racking up 71 yards and a touchdown. This duo was even better than I remembered them being when the 2010 season was initially taking place.

Tamba Hali continued to be a monster up front, notching a sack and three tackles while also hitting Bouman three times.

The most annoying part of this game – and I remember being annoyed about this back in 2010 as well – was the constant discussion on Todd Bouman. It got old real fast, but once the Chiefs defense was able to make him look like a quarterback who was just signed on Tuesday, the constant talk on him halted.

All of this being said, the score was only 28-20 Chiefs with 3:46 to play. With the Chiefs allowing three touchdowns from the Texans the week prior, no one felt comfortable in Kansas City’s chances to hold on, but the defense settled in and kept the Jags out of the end zone and from putting up any points at all.

At 4-2, the Kansas City Chiefs would look toward week eight where they’d be hosting the lowly Buffalo Bills. Could they move to 5-2?
