Kansas Basketball: 2020 NCAA Championship Game Simulation
Kansas basketball was one of two teams in the 2020 NCAA Championship Game that was being simulated throughout March Madness. They faced Louisville in the big game. How did things play out?
With March Madness being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a simmed tournament was put together thanks to an account on Twitter who would also release videos on YouTube to go along with the games.
This particular simulation had Kansas basketball making it all the way to the National Championship Game where they met up with the Louisville Cardinals. Ultimately, the Jayhawks fell by a score of 74-69 in a game that went back and forth throughout.
As the tweet below mentions, the Cardinals grabbed the lead at 65-64 and held onto that lead for the rest of the game in order to win the title and be National Champs.
Devon Dotson led the Jayhawks with 21 points while posting six assists and grabbing three rebounds. Udoke Azubuike also put up double digit points with 13 and had 12 rebounds on the night. It would have been a nice final outing for Doke despite not winning it all.
While this is only a simulation, it still would have been nice for Kansas to have won, as many fans thought they should have been crowned 2020 National Champions due to likely being the number one overall seed. It felt like Kansas’ year, but there were so many teams that had a shot at the title in 2020 and it’s a shame we didn’t truly get to see everything play out for real.
We’ll never know how the 2020 tournament would have played out or what upsets could have happened. A team upsetting the Jayhawks in the second or third round wouldn’t have shocked anyone because that can happen to any team at any time in March Madness; That’s why it’s the greatest event in all of sports.
To get to the final game in the sim, KU beat Villanova in the final seconds while Louisville knocked off Gonzaga. Both games were nail biters and it’s no wonder the title game was also a close one throughout with the teams trading leads time and time again.
KU’s last title came in 2008 while Louisville technically won it all in 2013, though that title has since been vacated. A title would have been huge for either program, but Kansas basketball fans will have to wait another year to see if 2021 is their year.
