KC Chiefs: Four remaining free agents who could help in 2020
By Kole Berrey
Delanie Walker, TE, Tennessee Titans
This signing is all basically dependent on what the Chiefs do in the draft. Blake Bell just signed with the Dallas Cowboys, and there is really no proven player on the roster to handle TE2 duties. The Chiefs could address this is in the draft, or they could choose to get younger at more key positions and roll with Delanie Walker.
This may not be the most pressing issue for the team, as Travis Kelce is set to be the man at tight end for years to come, and this offense is already explosive. The fact that Kelce is here though means the Chiefs can get away with not drafting a project tight end or replacement for a few years, and getting a vet like Walker to fill the hole in the meantime would be a huge win.
Walker is 35 years old, so the amount of gas left in his tank is probably minimal. He has also only played eight games in two seasons, so health is also a concern. That should be a reason Walker wants to go to the Chiefs, though, as they wouldn’t have to over use the tight end.
Being in Kansas City, Walker would draw the least amount of attention that he ever has in his entire career. He also would not have to be a focal point.
Being utilized minimally in two tight end sets with offensive guru Andy Reid calling the shots, Walker would be able to stay healthy and still make an impact. He would also have a chance at that elusive ring that most veterans covet as their career start winding down. Catching passes from all world quarterback Patrick Mahomes is probably pretty enticing as well.
Another factor to consider is that Walker has Missouri ties. He was born in California, but attended the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, which is right outside of Kansas City.
Walker would be a perfect fit for the KC Chiefs, and if the money is right, could have an impact on a Chiefs offense that is already one of the best in the history of the league.
