RANKING 2019 REGULAR SEASON GAMES

NUMBER 4: WEEK 4 VS LIONS (34-30 WIN)

Chiefs fans weren’t really expecting the Detroit Lions to put up much of a fight when the two met in week four for KC’s first game against the NFC North of the 2019 season. They soon found out, however, that the Lions were better than they had anticipated and gave the Chiefs everything they had.

Detroit had a 10-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Chiefs came roaring back to tie it up 13-13 at the half. It was looking like the Lions might be able to take a commanding lead, but Bashaud Breeland picked up a Detroit fumble and took it 100 yards to the house in a controversial scoop and score that went in KC’s favor.

The game continued to go back and forth in the final quarter with the Chiefs taking the lead early on after a Darrel Williams touchdown run and held the lead until a little over two minutes left. Matthew Stafford found Kenny Golladay in the end zone to put Detroit up by three with 2:31 remaining in the game.

In years past, Chiefs fans probably would have thought the game was over and they wouldn’t be able to get down the field in enough time, but that’s never the case with Patrick Mahomes. The eventual Super Bowl MVP executed a beautiful two minute drive where he went 6 of 9 for 55 yards while also rushing for 16 yards.

The play that most fans will remember in that game is when Mahomes – on fourth and eight – rushed for 15 yards up the middle to keep the drive alive and the game going. Later, his strike to Byron Pringle for 13 yards put the Chiefs on the Detroit three-yard line. Darrel Williams then bulldozed his way into the end zone and while the Lions still had a few cracks at the end zone, Kansas City won a nail biter.

While we’ve seen Mahomes do some incredible things throughout the course of his young career, this two-minute drive was a thing of beauty. That’s why this game sits as the fourth best of the 2019 season.
