Kansas City Chiefs add tight end in USA Today mock draft
The need for a tight end behind Travis Kelce is imminent and USA Today has the Kansas City Chiefs addressing that need in their latest mock draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs are fortunate to have the best tight end in the sport on their roster, but with Travis Kelce sitting at 30 years old, it’s time to think about life after Kelce in KC. Henry McKenna of USA Today has the Chiefs drafting a tight end with the 32nd pick in his recent mock draft.
The pick was Cole Kmet, a 6’4″, 235 pound tight end out of Notre Dame, who is widely considered to be the best tight end prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft.
McKenna wrote,
"There’s a chance that Sammy Watkins may not return, so Kmet is an interesting solution to that problem. Andy Reid could adapt the offense to deploy more two tight end sets, which could be cheat-code dominant. Yes, this is a hyperbolic comparison, but there are snippets of Gronk in Kmet’s game."
While tight end isn’t the most important position for most teams, Kmet falling to the 32nd pick might not be the likeliest of scenarios. With the tight end free agent market not being all that great, teams will be looking to the draft to find their next stud tight end and Kmet is the best of a not so great position class, making him even more appealing.
Kmet – who spent three seasons at Notre Dame – didn’t put up the most eye popping stats during his time in South Bend, but looks to be a good project at the tight end position. Fortunately for the Chiefs, they don’t need a TE1 immediately, as Kelce is still the best of the best and under contract for a few more years. That would give Kansas City plenty of time to get Kmet acclimated to the offense.
The Chiefs need to find a suitable backup behind Kelce, and Kmet would be a terrific option to slot in there. Joe Marino of The Draft Network had this to say about Kmet,
"From a frame perspective, Kmet is exactly what the NFL is looking for in an in-line tight end prospect and there is plenty to like about his projection to that role in the NFL. He is a smooth route-runner with excellent ball skills and the ability to win in contested situations."
Kmet might not still be on the board when pick 32 rolls around and there’s also a good chance that the Chiefs opt to move out of the first round all together to gather more picks. If they were to select Kmet, however, fans would be thrilled, as it’d give them two great tight end options and that’d be tough for opposing defenses to stop.
How would you feel if the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Cole Kmet?
