KC Chiefs: Possible route to trading Chris Jones and improving roster
By Shade Piper
What to do with all that cap space
Instead of paying Chris Jones his well-deserved $18-20 million per season, the KC Chiefs would bring in an elite young defensive tackle on a rookie deal that would pay him $4.8 million per year starting out, according to Over the Cap. That extra $15 million per year could go a long way to improving this team.

The Chiefs have a lot of free agents that they’d love to keep if they have the cap space. This includes guys like Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller, Stefen Wisniewski, Emmanuel Ogbah, Mike Pennel, and Demarcus Robinson.
The Chiefs could probably use their new-found cap space to resign Breeland, Wisniewski, Ogbah, and Pennel and still have room to go after a solid free agent like Chris Harris for example. Harris’ market value is $11 million according to Spotrac, but the Chiefs could hope for a home town, Super Bowl contender discount with Harris and maybe get him in the $8-10 million range.
A player of Chris Jones’ caliber is tough to replace, but maybe the combination of adding Brown and Harris and being able to resign Breeland, Wisniewski, Ogbah, and Pennel would be enough to close that hole and then some (and we didn’t even mention Sammy Watkins whom KC could probably also keep in this situation/or use his cap space to further improve).
Again, I would be more than happy to welcome Chris Jones back to help Kansas City get to another Super Bowl, but I do see other avenues where the Chiefs could have success even in moving on from Jones if they are willing to get creative.
What would y’all think of this route, Chiefs Kingdom? It would be tough to move on from Jones, but this could be a good option for the Chiefs if a separation becomes inevitable.
