KC Chiefs: Possible route to trading Chris Jones and improving roster
By Shade Piper
The KC Chiefs are in quite the precarious situation when it comes to Chris Jones. This is leaving the Chiefs with the imminent ultimatum of choosing to extend or trade a very key piece to their 2020 Super Bowl squad.
Chris Jones, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ recently franchise-tagged star free agent defensive tackle, does not appear to be fully pleased with his situation of playing under the franchise tag. This is why it appears that the Chiefs will ultimately have to decide sooner rather than later to either extend or trade Jones.
I, along with most of Chiefs Kingdom, am on Team Extend Chris Jones, especially with the recent report from FanSided’s Matt Verderame about the salary cap potentially exploding to $240 million in 2021. However, there could be potential positives to both scenarios, which is why I decided to write this article.
It is a way too under-discussed truth that the Chiefs would not have won the Super Bowl without Jones. His three crucial batted passes in the fourth quarter are just as important as Patrick Mahomes‘ miracle “jet chip wasp” third and long completion and as Damien Williams‘ “run into immortality.”
It’s obvious that Jones is a great football player and probably top two at his position. The Chiefs would be in a great position to win multiple more Super Bowls with a guy like Jones continuing his post as the Mayor of Sack Nation in Kansas City, but that doesn’t mean that this is their only route to future success.
Let’s look at a scenario where the Chiefs could trade Jones and still remain a Super Bowl contender for years to come. Let’s start with the potential trade suitors.
