Laquon Treadwell

The Chiefs wide receiver group may look quite a bit different in 2020.

If Sammy Watkins‘ contract cannot be restructured to a new team-friendly deal, he’ll likely be playing somewhere else. There’s also the likelihood that Demarcus Robinson will venture out and find a bigger contract with a receiver-needy team.

Thankfully, the Chiefs will still have some very effective weapons at the position; Speedsters Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman provide a good foundation to add other receivers around.

If Watkins does indeed depart, the Chiefs will likely look to add a player with the same kind of size as Watkins. One player that could make sense is Laquon Treadwell.

Treadwell is a former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2016. There was a report that the Chiefs were interested in moving up to draft the 6’2″ 215-pound receiver that year. Thankfully, the Chiefs don’t seem to have missed much by not drafting the former Ole Miss standout.

Over four seasons, Treadwell has only tallied two receiving touchdowns and about 700 yards receiving. That’s essentially the definition of a first-round draft bust, but maybe Treadwell should no longer be considered a first-round talent and therefore, not be paid like a first-round talent.

After falling in the depth chart behind talented players like Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, could his role be similar in Kansas City?

Treadwell could be brought in on a cheaper, short-term deal and be used to pull a little defensive attention away from Hill and Hardman. With the offensive genius of Andy Reid, maybe Treadwell could really shine in certain scenarios.

While he’s been a bust in Minnesota, hopefully, he could reach a higher potential in Kansas City. Treadwell will be a name to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
