Kansas City Chiefs focus on defense in 2020 NFL Mock Draft
ROUND 2: PICK 31 (63RD OVERALL)
This pick would most likely irritate some people, as there are quite a few people who are strongly against the notion of taking a running back in the early portion of the draft – or at all in the draft.
In this case, the Chiefs didn’t spend their first round pick on one, but the need for a running back is still very much there and with J.K. Dobbins sitting there at pick 63, how could the Chiefs not be tempted to take him?
Dobbins was a freak of an athlete during his three years at Ohio State, rushing for 1,000+ yards all three years. This past season saw him go over the 2,000 yards rushing mark with 2,003 and also finding the end zone 23 total times (21 rushing, two receiving).
Dobbins is a work horse and can absolutely take over games by himself. Despite being known for their passing ability, the Chiefs need to get back to having an elite running back and J.K. Dobbins would most definitely fit that need.
The Chiefs still have Damien Williams under contract for 2020 and also have Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson, but none of those guys provided what Dobbins could provide on a weekly basis.
WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:
"Dobbins isn’t going to be that creative back with the wiggle and juice to create something out of nothing, but he has the efficiency, production and third-down value teams covet. Dobbins could land a shared-carries role quickly and has the potential to become a solid NFL starter. -Lance Zierlein, NFL.com"
ROUND 3: PICK 32 (96TH OVERALL)
The Chiefs might be losing Chris Jones this offseason, which would take away a big piece in their pass rushing unit. Adding someone like Bradlee Anae – which the Chiefs did in the third round of this mock draft – could be a nice replacement option.
Anae spent all four years at Utah and this past season had 13 sacks along with 41 tackles (14 for lost yardage). He wouldn’t necessarily solve the problems when it comes to stopping the run, but Anae would likely be used more as a pass rushing weapon. He’d be a riskier pick, but the 13 sacks are definitely eye popping, especially in the PAC-12.
Obviously we’ll have a better idea what the defensive line and linebackers will look like after free agency, but for now – Bradlee Anae would be a safe pick here.
WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:
"Anae is fairly developed as a pass rusher and has been successfully exposed to multiple alignments to help place him in disruptive roles. There are some leverage issues present that will flare up in his game but Anae should be considered a potential starter at the next level with his developed hands, high effort and pro caliber build and athleticism. -Kyle Crabbs, The Draft Network"
