The Kansas City Chiefs were able to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years due to upgrading on defense. They’ll need to continue that formula in 2020 if they want to repeat as champions and they do so in our recent 2020 NFL Mock Draft.

It’s mock draft season and that means every other week until Day 1 of the draft, I’ll be pumping out a Kansas City Chiefs mock draft! Each week will have a different theme with this week’s being how the Chiefs focus on defense while drafting.

This was my first mock draft using The Draft Network‘s simulator and I have to say – I’m a fan. I’ll definitely be using theirs more frequently as draft season continues on.

Anyway, back to what I was saying before – The Chiefs need to make sure their defense is still in tip top shape heading into next year, but they have a lot of key playmakers on that side of the ball hitting free agency, which will make things difficult.

Even more difficult is the fact that the Chiefs – as of right now – have just five selections in the 2020 NFL Draft. Don’t be surprised to see them trade out of the first round and scrounge up more picks; That’d be ideal for the organization, as they head into their first draft as Super Bowl champions since 1970.

Without further ado, let’s get to the picks!

ROUND 1: PICK 32 (32ND OVERALL)

Cornerback. Horned Frogs . Jeff Gladney. 32. player. 872.

What the Chiefs do with their first round pick will strongly hinge on what happens throughout the course of free agency. If they’re able to retain Bashaud Breeland or Kendall Fuller (or even both), then the need for a cornerback isn’t as strong.

If, however, both Breeland and Fuller sign elsewhere – which is a strong possibility – the Chiefs very well could go with a cornerback in round one and if they do, Jeff Gladney is a solid pick.

Gladney could be exactly who the Chiefs are looking to add to their secondary and keep them just as serviceable even with the departure of two good players. He’s fast, athletic, and played his college ball in a conference that’s known for scoring a lot of points. Even still, Gladney held his own.

While there are better options at corner in the 2020 NFL Draft, Jeff Gladney might be the most realistic selection for the Chiefs at the position with where they’re picking at. He’d be a great addition to this secondary in 2020 and beyond.

WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:

"Gladney is a fierce competitor that is aggressive crowding routes early, he tackles and doesn’t get bullied by bigger-body wide receivers. His ball skills are sound and he’s disruptive at the catch point. -Joe Marino, The Draft Network"
