Kansas City Chiefs: Five players to cut in 2020 offseason
DANIEL SORENSEN
For years now, Daniel Sorensen has been the guy that Chiefs fans have been predicting would be cut, but then he finds his way onto the team. This past season, Sorensen’s presence on the roster ended up being crucial, especially after Juan Thornhill went down and missed the playoffs.
All of that being said, Sorensen is someone the Chiefs are going to have to set their emotional ties aside for and look at it as a business. The soon-to-be 30 year old safety is due over $3 million in 2020, but if the Chiefs cut ties there, it’ll be $1 million in dead money instead.
Chiefs fans are going to cling to the pivotal play Sorensen had in the Divisional Round, but the team can’t make the mistake of keeping guys just for sentimental reasons. That’s what sinks Super Bowl teams to the depths of irrelevancy very quickly.
SAMMY WATKINS
This one shouldn’t shock anyone. Sammy Watkins might have been clutch during his two postseason runs with the Chiefs, but in the regular season he was either hurt or nearly invisible on the field.
While Watkins is under contract for one more season, he’s made comments that he’s not really sure what the future has in store for him. He could stay with the Chiefs and take a pay cut, get cut from the team all together, or – as he said in the week leading up to the Super Bowl – he might take 2020 off from football.
The Chiefs need wide receiver depth this offseason, but Watkins hasn’t been worth what the Chiefs are paying him. This should be a rather easy decision for the organization, but if Watkins is willing to take a significant pay cut, then going that route works too and saves the team from having to spend an early draft pick on a wideout.
