KC Royals: Four players who have most to gain in 2020 spring training
By Cody Rickman
Khalil Lee – Outfielder
Khalil Lee is still only 21-years-old and has played four professional seasons in the Royals minor league system. With a non-roster invitation to spring training, he will one of the youngest players at the facility. He brings potential for power, speed on the base-paths, plate discipline, and plus defense to the outfield.

Lee has the talent to be one of the most exciting players in spring training camp with the potential to bring 20+ homeruns and 30+ stolen bases to a line-up begging for another consistent offensive star. What is holding Lee back is inexperience, age, and a lot of “swing and miss” in his plate approach.
Terry Bradshaw and Drew Saylor will get to have some hands-on instruction with the young and talented Lee this spring and could instruct Lee with a similar plate approach they could have with Phillips. Lee has shown a lot of plate discipline in the minors, but also a high strikeout rate and could benefit from going to the plate with a better plan of attack.
Lee has yet to tap into his power and this may be a result of a flawed plan at the plate. With an educated and more aggressive approach, Lee could unlock that power potential.
Lee is a non-roster invitee to spring training and will most likely head to AAA Omaha to start out the 2020 season. With the MLB baseball being used in AAA, Lee could see an explosion in his offensive numbers.
It’s important not to over analyze the numbers and look more closely at the approach. If Lee is making better swing decisions and avoiding falling behind in counts frequently, then the numbers could be believable.
There is exceptional talent and potential for Khalil Lee to possibly make an MLB debut in 2020 if he refines his approach.

A successful 2020 campaign would entail the Kansas City Royals getting above the 65-win total, promoting several prospects by midseason so they can get their feet wet at the highest level, trading away some veteran players on expiring contracts, and promising players showing enough progression to project the 2021 Royals for more success.
