The KC Chiefs are Super Bowl champions and they’ll look to repeat in the 2020 season. Along the way, there will be some tough regular season opponents; One of them being the New Orleans Saints, who are getting Drew Brees back.

There wasn’t much doubt that Drew Brees would step away from football after the way the Saints’ season ended, but now it’s official: He’s back. You may be wondering why a Kansas City Chiefs site is covering Brees’ decision to return and that’s because the Chiefs and Saints will play each other in the regular season in 2020.

These two teams play each other every four years and this will be the first time the two have been competitive at the same time in a season where they’re slated to play each other. The game will take place in New Orleans and hopefully it’ll be a primetime affair, as both teams will have high hopes in 2020.

We got close to seeing these two square off in Super Bowl LIII, as both the Chiefs and the Saints had the number one seed in their respective conferences, but we all know how that ended; The Chiefs were one offsides call away from punching their ticket to the Super Bowl while the Saints were robbed on the infamous non-call that we’ll probably keep talking about until New Orleans wins another title.

Anyway – Back to the 2020 match-up: The game would have been intriguing even if Brees had decided to retire, but now it’ll be him against Patrick Mahomes; A first ballot Hall of Famer against a guy already showing he’s Hall of Fame worthy, even at just 24 years of age.

Brees used to face the Chiefs a lot back when he was with the Chargers, but even as good as San Diego was then and as bad as the Chiefs were, he still went a mere 3-4 against them during that time. He’s 1-2 versus the Chiefs since he made the move to New Orleans.

Had Brees not elected to return, the Saints would have a decision to make between inking Teddy Bridgewater to a big deal, keeping Taysom Hill as a potential starter, or taking someone in the draft. They still have a good enough defense to have been respectable in 2020, but Brees is the best choice out of those options. They can still draft someone to eventually take over for him as well.

There was actually talk three years ago that the Saints wanted to draft Mahomes with the 11th overall pick, but the Chiefs ultimately jumped in front of them and selected him. Expect that to be mentioned 100 times during this game’s broadcast.

When looking at the Chiefs’ 2020 schedule, several games stand out as must-see primetime TV and their game against the Saints falls in that category. Hopefully the NFL puts this one on Sunday Night Football because watching Mahomes go against that Saints defense should be a fun time.
