The KC Chiefs finally abandoned the Demetrius Harris project last year, but now there could be a chance the former Chiefs tight end rejoins his old team. This move doesn’t need to be made.
Fresh off their Super Bowl victory, the Kansas City Chiefs can’t be content with just the one title. In order to continue vying for titles, the Chiefs will need to add depth and the tight end position is one that needs depth.
Sure, the Chiefs have Travis Kelce, who is the best in the league at the tight end position, but he’s 30 years old and there’s not a viable backup on the roster right now. The team needs to draft one this April and find their future TE2; Demetrius Harris doesn’t need to be that player. We’ve been down this road before and it’s not worth revisiting.
Harris spent the first five years of his career with the Chiefs after having played basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. For whatever reason, Andy Reid was infatuated with not only keeping Harris around, but having Alex Smith throw the ball to him in pivotal moments.
The Chiefs were interested in bringing Harris back last year before he signed a 2-year, $6million deal with Browns with $3.25 million guaranteed. Could see a KC reunion if the price is right. https://t.co/gk975rvNRL

After five years in Kansas City, Harris signed with the Cleveland Browns for the 2019 season and had just 15 receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns. It made sense for the Browns to bring Harris in due to John Dorsey being the general manager there, but Dorsey’s departure mixed with a lack of production led to Cleveland releasing the tight end.
Matt Derrick – beat writer for Chiefs Digest – tweeted that there could be a reunion with Harris and the Chiefs and this isn’t a move that needs to be made at all. The Chiefs need to start thinking about the future after Kelce, and Demetrius Harris isn’t that. Even more, Harris didn’t do much even when he was in Kansas City, so I’m still unsure as to why the Chiefs would want to bring him back.
Kelce has two years left on his deal and will probably play in Kansas City for longer than just those two years. That being said, teams always need to be looking ahead and adding younger depth at tight end would be wise.
The Chiefs rolled with Blake Bell as the backup tight end last year and he did very little for the team, so hopefully that shows the offense should look to the draft to address the TE2 and not sign someone in free agency.
