KC Chiefs: Best 2019 single game performance for each position player
SAMMY WATKINS
- BEST PERFORMANCE: WEEK 1 VS JAGUARS (9 RECEPTIONS FOR 198 YARDS, 3 TD)
- RUNNER-UP: AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME VS TITANS (7 RECEPTIONS FOR 114 YARDS, TD)
Sammy Watkins didn’t have a great 2019 season, but the games he did show up in, he put up monster numbers. No one should be surprised to see Watkins’ week one outing as the best of his 2019 campaign, as he came out hot right out of the gate and went for nearly 200 yards with a hat trick in Jacksonville.
After the season opener, however, it was nothing doing for Watkins, who finished the year with just 673 yards and three touchdowns. He’d have finished with 475 yards and zero touchdowns without that epic week one showing.
In the postseason, however, Watkins upped the ante, totaling 288 yards and a touchdown off of 14 receptions. His touchdown in the AFC title game against Tennessee is what essentially iced the game and sent the Chiefs to the Super Bowl. He had another big catch in the Super Bowl that put Kansas City in prime position to make their 21-point comeback in the fourth quarter.
While Watkins’ contract will always be looked at with skepticism, he earned that money for his playoff presentations.
DAMIEN WILLIAMS
- BEST PERFORMANCE: SUPER BOWL LIV (17 ATT, 104 YDS, TD; 4 REC, 29 YDS, TD)
- RUNNER-UP: WEEK 9 VS VIKINGS (12 CARRIES, 125 YARDS, TD)
Damien Williams was hit or miss in 2019, but he made it count when the Chiefs needed him the most, which is why I picked Super Bowl LIV as his best game of the season. He might not have had the most yards in that one, but the fact that he was a talking point that week as someone who should have won MVP shows how important he was in that match-up.
For his second best display, I went with week nine against Minnesota, which could have easily been considered as his best game. In that one, a game where Mahomes was out due to injury, Williams rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and helped pave the way for a much needed victory.
The reason I didn’t put that Vikings game as the best outing was because 91 of those 125 yards came via one run. Yes, it was an impressive run, but Williams had a much more monumental run in the Super Bowl (you all know which one I’m talking about) and that gave Kansas City their first title in five decades.
So yeah – I’d say Super Bowl LIV was his best performance.
