KC Chiefs who may have played final game for team in Super Bowl LIV
By Chris Clark
Dustin Colquitt
This is a tough one. It seems odd that the player that a team least likes to see on the field can be such a fan favorite.
Punter Dustin Colquitt has been one of the most consistent parts of the Chiefs’ roster since 2005. To put the length of his career into perspective, Colquitt would have been on the same roster with Chiefs’ great, Priest Holmes. Even after 15 seasons, it seems like Colquitt is ageless.
Like any timeless player, though, all football careers must come to an end. While Colquitt doesn’t seem to be showing signs of slowing down, the organization may have other plans. It’s not uncommon for a team to bring in a little competition during training camp to push a few aging veterans. That seems to be what the Chiefs did with rookie punter Jack Fox prior to the 2019 season.
Not surprisingly, the always consistent Colquitt kept his starting gig and Fox ended up spending a little time on the Chiefs’ practice squad. But with the salary difference between the two, it’s understandable if Colquitt’s value to the team was called into question.
Now that the nearly 38-year-old veteran has won the big one after all this time with the team, he may himself choose to ride off into the sunset. If not, the Chiefs may elect to make a business decision and look for a cheaper option.
Fortunately for the Chiefs, the position of punter seems to be slightly less crucial with such a potent offense. A team doesn’t always know how valuable a good punter is, though, until they don’t have one. But this might be a good time for the Chiefs to transition to a cheaper option to help create cap space.
If the longest-tenured Chief isn’t on the roster in 2020, it’ll be the end of an era and likely the end of a brilliant career complete with the lowest of lows and the highest of highs.
