Terrell Suggs

One of the bigger surprises of the 2019 season was the late-season addition of veteran edge rusher, Terrell Suggs. After playing for the Baltimore Ravens for 16 seasons, Suggs hit free agency and signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Oddly enough, after 13 games and 5.5 sacks, the Cardinals cut the future Hall of Fame defender late in the season. With Suggs being 37 years old, many questioned what he would have left in the tank.

It was reported that Suggs’ desire was to either return to the Ravens or sit out for the rest of the season. This was understandable since he basically spent his whole career in Baltimore and they were primed for a Super Bowl run themselves.

In a bit of a surprising move, the Chiefs put in a waiver claim on Suggs, although it was viewed mostly as move just to keep him from returning to the AFC challenger. In what seemed to go against his earlier desire, Suggs reported to the Chiefs to play what little remained of the regular season.

With a great coaching staff and promising look at a Super Bowl run, Suggs seemed excited to be in Kansas City. Not only did this move keep him off the Ravens’ roster, but he also filled a void that the Chiefs had.

With Kansas City having trouble keeping edge rushers healthy over the season, the addition of Suggs turned out to be a great move. He contributed well in a rotational role on the field and brought veteran leadership and experience to the locker room.

It seems like moves like these rarely work out late in a season with team chemistry and a player on the cusp of retirement. Fortunately, it did this time.

With Suggs’ contract voiding last week, he becomes an unrestricted free agent in March. It’s very easy to see Suggs going out on top, winning the Super Bowl before retiring after a Hall of Fame-worthy 17-year career. He’ll likely retire as a Baltimore Raven while playing his last snap as a Kansas City Chief.
