KC Chiefs: Kicking tires on Dez Bryant for 2020 season not a bad idea

Dez Bryant worked out with KC Chiefs receiver Mecole Hardman. With several wide receivers hitting free agency this spring, bringing in Bryant for the 2020 season wouldn’t be crazy in the least bit.

The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will be busy this offseason when it comes to free agency and one name that fans can expect to see linked to them is Dez Bryant, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys.

With Sammy Watkins‘ future as a Chief up in the air and Demarcus Robinson reaching the end of his rookie deal, that leaves the Chiefs thin at the wide receiver position. Watkins is an easy cut this summer and Robinson won’t be worth whatever team overpays him in March. That means the Chiefs are going to need to find another wide receiver to add to the depth chart come training camp season.

With Dez Bryant working out with Mecole Hardman last week, we can officially start the “Dez to Kansas City” talk if we hadn’t already.  Hardman tweeted about the two training together last Friday.

Bryant last played in the 2017 season with the Cowboys, hauling in 69 receptions for 838 yards and six touchdowns. His last ELITE season was in 2014 when he had 88 receptions for 1,320 yards and 16 touchdowns.

While having elite Bryant in Kansas City would obviously be nice, that’s not a realistic expectation to have for a 31 year old wideout. If he did join the offense, he’d surely be behind Tyreek Hill and more than likely would be behind Mecole Hardman on the depth chart as well. Hardman might not have been used much as a receiver in 2019, but with Watkins and Robinson likely gone, that will definitely change in 2020.

Bryant would be a nice WR3/WR4 for Patrick Mahomes in a year where the Kansas City Chiefs will look to replicate their success from a season ago. He won’t be anywhere close to the guy we last saw in 2017 due to his age and past injuries, but he wouldn’t have to be; Hill, Hardman, and Travis Kelce would be Mahomes’ go to guys (sprinkle Byron Pringle in there as well, as he showed he was capable of having a big game every now and then).

As for the diva personality Dez Bryant once had, he tweeted last Thursday that he didn’t plan to be the WR1 for whatever offense takes a chance on him. He doesn’t want to be the focal point anymore.

“I bet I do damage” tweeted Bryant and while we don’t know whether he’s right or not at the moment, the KC Chiefs should really consider kicking the tires on the former Cowboys star.
