#41 draft pick overall – Ian Bedell, Pitcher (pick value $1,813,500)

Ian Bedell is a 20-year-old, 6’2”, 203 lb., right-handed pitcher out the University of Missouri. Bedell has been used mostly as reliever at the University of Missouri, but absolutely dominated in transitioning into a starter during the 2019 Cape Cod league.

  • 2019 stats (NCAA): 1.56 ERA, 0.992 WHIP, 36 Ks, 12 BB with 5 saves in 40.1 innings
  • 2019 stats (Cap Cod): 0.59 ERA, 0.652 WHIP, 36 Ks, 3 BB in 30.2 innings

According to the scouting report on Bedell at prospectslive.com;

"“Bedell showed flashes this spring at Missouri, posting a 1.56 ERA and 36:12 K/BB ratio although starting just one game. However for the Gatemen he posted a 0.58 ERA with a ridiculous 36:3 K/BB ratio in 6 regular season starts. His fastball, which some players describe as trying to hit a Blitz Ball, has ridiculous run and he will sit 90-93 while bumping 4s and 5s consistently. He flashed an above average change that would essentially fall off a table crossing the plate, as well as an above average curveball."

Over at fangraphs.com this is what they had to say about Bedell,

"“Emerged on the Cape, taking a step forward with starter traits and a solid average four pitch mix: 89-94, above average curveball, solid average changeup.”"

Watching the video, Bedell throws from a 3/4s arm slot with little head snap and easy follow through. He gets behind the pitch to transfer his momentum into the pitch for easy velocity in the 91-93 mph range. He stays on top of the ball to command his pitches low in the zone as well as attack the corners.

At the 0:37 mark, you can see his sharp hooking slider that has some downward bite. He attacks the inside part of the plate well against lefties and makes them look absolutely foolish with a disappearing change-up (see video mark 1:15) on the outside part of the plate.

Bedell has four solid offerings and has a lot to prove this spring for the Missouri Tigers. He could continue to climb up the draft board if performs like he did at the Cape Cod league last summer. He looks like he has maxed out physically with little room to mature any further. His stuff right now appears to be that of a number three type pitcher.

Taking a potential number three type pitcher at the #41 pick of the draft would be excellent value for the Royals. Bedell’s maturity makes him nearer to making his MLB debut and he would be nice addition to the Royals pitching prospect wave that’s set to take over the MLB roster in the next few years.
