Kansas City Chiefs: Unsung heroes en route to Super Bowl LIV victory
CHIEFS CORNERBACKS
Coming into the 2019 season, the cornerback position seemed to be a big weakness for the defense. This was a group that didn’t perform well in 2018 and little was done to upgrade it over the offseason.
Somehow, someway – The cornerbacks ended up playing great.
The unit, led by Bashaud Breeland, Rashad Fenton, Kendall Fuller, and Charvarius Ward did their part in making sure Jimmy G didn’t get the big time throws in near the end of the game. Yes, Garoppolo overthrew Emmanuel Sanders, but the 49ers still had chances to get first downs and the corners made sure that didn’t happen.
Scott Loring of Arrowhead Addict said it best,
"It is remarkable that, even without the perceived top-flight shutdown corner (of which there might not be even one in the entire league, but that’s another discussion), the Chiefs were able to work cohesively on defense to reach the Super Bowl. Fuller and Breeland each played outstanding games in Miami, as both intercepted Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo."
This group might not have been the Legion of Boom or even a second tier version of that, but when it mattered most, they locked things down and helped ensure their team a victory in the biggest game of the season.
