After a 2015 season that saw the Kansas City Chiefs winning a playoff game for the first time in over two decades, fans were amped for what the 2016 season had in store.
The early part of the season was rough, with the Chiefs being demolished by the Chargers until they had one of the best comebacks in team history and ultimately won it in overtime. After the first quarter of the season, however, they sat at 2-2 on the year and no one was really sure what to expect from this team, especially after an ugly blowout loss to the Steelers on Sunday Night Football.
Well, after that, the Chiefs went on a five game win streak to sit at 7-2 and that came at the perfect time, as both the Raiders and Broncos were also doing well in the AFC West. The biggest stretch of games came during weeks 12-14 in which the Chiefs went into Denver and posted another big comeback with yet another impressive overtime victory.
The next week, they battled hard with the explosive Atlanta Falcons (who ended up going to the Super Bowl that year) and the following week decimated a Raiders team who had been nipping at their heels in the West all season long.
While it was a close finish at the end of the season, the Chiefs won the AFC West despite both them and the Raiders finishing the year at 12-4. It was the first time the Chiefs had won the division since the 2010 season and gave Kansas City the two seed in the playoffs.
The ending of the 2016 season ended up being a disappointment, as the Chiefs fell to the Steelers in the AFC Divisional Round despite Pittsburgh not scoring a single touchdown. This was also a season of firsts for the Chiefs and saw them win a lot of games that they honestly had no business winning.
As mentioned above, the win over the Falcons was a big one and Eric Berry was the reason KC won that game. He had a pick six and a “pick two”, intercepting the pass on the two point conversion to ice the game.
Kansas City had another similar game where they went into Carolina and looked to be on their way to a loss before Marcus Peters punched the football out to help the Chiefs clinch a victory. Berry also returned for a fumble for a touchdown in that game.
Even though the 2016 season ended on a sour note, the regular season was a lot of fun to follow along with and for that reason, it sits at as the fourth best season of the decade.
