RANKING EVERY SEASON FROM 2010-2019

NUMBER 5: 2013

  • Regular Season Record: 11-5
  • Playoff Result: Lost in Wild Card Round to Colts
  • Biggest Win: Week 15 vs Raiders (56-31)
  • Worst Loss: Week 16 vs Colts (23-7)
  • Team MVP: Jamaal Charles
  • Rookie of the Year: Marcus Cooper
  • Notable Achievements: Starting the year 9-0 after winning just two games in 2012

After going 2-14 in 2012, the Kansas City Chiefs tore it all down and started from scratch. They hired Andy Reid as their next head coach, John Dorsey as their general manager, and they had traded for Alex Smith to be their next quarterback.

It was quite the shock when the Chiefs rattled off nine wins to start the Andy Reid era in Kansas City, but fans weren’t upset about it. The team might have been a bit of a fraud during that 9-0 run because they played a lot of backup quarterbacks and overall crummy teams.

Still, a 9-0 start after winning just two games the season prior was awesome for Chiefs Kingdom and honestly – All any of us wanted at that point in time was a competitive team. Fans didn’t expect to win the Super Bowl or anything absurd like that; We just wanted a team who could win games.

The 2013 season was a tale of two halves for the Chiefs. They started the season by beating teams with good defense; forcing turnovers and keeping teams out of the end zone was KC’s specialty through the first half of the season. It was needed too because while Smith was better than any quarterback the team had had for years, the offense wasn’t explosive by any means.

Something happened after the bye week though and that was the defense suddenly playing poorly and the offense heating up and winning games for the Chiefs. That was especially the case in week 15 when the Chiefs went into the Black Hole and hung 56 points on the Raiders while allowing 31 points.

That win over Oakland was also the famous Jamaal Charles game in which he killed the Raiders as a pass catcher and scored five total touchdowns on the day. What a performance by the eventual 2013 Chiefs MVP.

While the 2013 season was special at the time, it ended on an incredibly sour note. We all remember the collapse against the Colts in the Wild Card round that year, so there’s no need to discuss that here. It put quite the damper on what, at the time, had been a pretty fun and special season.

Going from 2-12 one year to 11-5 and making the playoffs the next was a huge leap though and for that reason, the 2013 season sits as the fifth best season of the decade.
