After a promising 2016 season that saw the Chiefs go 12-4 and notch a two seed in the playoffs, fans expected even more in 2017. The Kingdom really started to buy into this team when they started the year at 5-0 and Alex Smith was out there throwing dimes week after week.
Then, of course, the decline came and it hit quickly, as the Chiefs were sitting at 6-6 in week 13 after starting out 5-0. For those whose speciality isn’t math, that means they went a mere 1-6 after that hot start.
The worst skid came after the week 10 bye when the Chiefs dropped three straight games to subpar opponents (all of them being New York teams oddly enough). The overtime loss to the Giants was arguably the most frustrating loss of the year with Smith and the offense sputtering and not being able to do a darn thing against a horrible Giants team, who ended up with the second worst record in the league that year.
Despite that bad skid, the Chiefs finished the year going 4-0 to end their season with a 10-6 record. That was good enough to win the AFC West and hold the four seed in the playoffs where the Chiefs were heavy favorites against the Wild Card Tennessee Titans.
Well, we all know how that one ended. It was obvious after that loss that the end of the Alex Smith era had come and it was time to hand the keys to the car to Patrick Mahomes, who was a rookie in the 2017 season.
Mahomes, of course, made his NFL debut in week 17 due to the Chiefs not being able to move up in the playoff standings and resting their starters as a result. He beat the Broncos and that, in turn, showed the Chiefs organization that the future MVP was ready to take over the franchise.
The 2017 season started off so promising, but in the end, it’s going to be a forgotten season despite everything the team accomplished. They dominated the Patriots on the road in week one on what was “banner and ring night” for the then-defending Super Bowl champions.
They also had that crazy “Hill Mary” play in Dallas against the Cowboys where Tyreek Hill took a fairly short pass from Smith and was somehow able to find the end zone. That was a play that we’ll all remember for a long time even though Kansas City lost that game.
As mentioned, the 2017 season ended on a sour note, but it paved the way for Mahomes to become the superstar that he is. Even with that in mind, it’s sixth on this list.
