Honesty hour – When I first started working on this article in mid December, I had the 2019 season as the third best season of the decade. At that point, the Chiefs were set to be the three seed in the playoffs and while they were red hot, a three seed hasn’t made it to the Super Bowl in quite awhile, so the chances of them making it to the big game as the three seed didn’t seem likely.

Well, we all know now how the 2019 season ended and it was with Andy Reid and company hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in front of millions of viewers. It was the first championship for the Chiefs in 50 years and this team really did have the feel of a special group once they went on their six-game winning streak to close out the regular season.

Before we dive more into all of that, let’s start from the very beginning.

Coming off a 12-4 season, the number one seed, and being so close to making the Super Bowl, it was no wonder why the Chiefs were as hyped as they had ever been in the 2019 season. They picked up right where they had left off, starting the year at 4-0 with Patrick Mahomes continuing his MVP-like performances.

Like there is with every championship team, however, losses started to come. The Chiefs lost two in a row (both at home) to fall to 4-2 on the year and in week seven, it looked like Mahomes would be lost for the rest of the year due to a dislocated knee cap.

After missing two starts (in which the Chiefs went 1-1), Mahomes returned in week ten to the delight of everyone. He played lights out against the Titans, but three awful miscues by the Chiefs led to their fourth loss of the season and all seemed lost.

The team had four losses on their resumé at that point and some difficult games still to come plus the Ravens and Patriots were cooking at that moment, so it really didn’t seem likely that KC could make much noise in the playoffs.

Instead, the Chiefs rattled off six straight wins to close out the regular season.

In the season finale against the Chargers, fans were eagerly monitoring the Patriots/Dolphins game to see if the Fins could pull off the upset there. With a little FitzMagic guiding them, the Dolphins stunned the Patriots, dropping them to the three seed and propelling the Chiefs to the two seed. It was one of those moments where you started to truly believe this could be Kansas City’s year.

In the Divisional Round, the Chiefs fell behind 24-0, but took a 28-24 lead by half time. They went on to blowout the Houston Texans and wound up securing home field advantage in the AFC Championship Game due to the number one seeded Ravens losing.

In the title game, Kansas City once again trailed by double digits, but Mahomes’ insane touchdown run was something we’ll all remember forever. The Chiefs won by 11 points over a pesky Titans team that had had their number over the years and advanced to the Super Bowl for the first time in five decades.

Advancing to the Super Bowl would have been enough to move this season into number one for the decade, but the Chiefs did that one better by winning the whole dang thing. You won’t believe this, but they were down double digits once again and ended up scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter to win the game and be the world champions of football.
