The KC Chiefs’ season isn’t over yet, but it’s still fun to look at different 2020 mock drafts floating around out there. In Pro Football Focus’ latest mock draft, they had the Chiefs addressing the depth at cornerback.

In a recent article put out by Pro Football Focus, Ben Linsey listed depth at cornerback being the biggest offseason need for the Kansas City Chiefs. Well, Michael Renner of PFF apparently agreed with that sentiment, and had the Chiefs selecting Cameron Dantzler of Mississippi State with their first round draft choice in his mock draft.

Of course, we’re all looking at the number where these analysts predict the remaining teams to be picking, and Renner had the Chiefs at number 31. We’d obviously rather they be at 32, but that’s a storyline for another day.

Renner had this to say about why he had the Chiefs select Dantzler,

"On 568 coverage snaps over the past two seasons, Dantzler allowed all of 36 catches for 459 yards. Those are silly numbers for a sophomore/junior in the SEC. Dantzler also holds the title of the only cornerback not torched by LSU this season, as he allowed 2-of-4 targets to be caught for 13 yards in that game."

Dantzler recorded two interceptions and had eight passes defensed in his junior year in Starkville. He was a difference maker in that Bulldogs secondary, which was made clear by Renner’s note of him being the only player to hold his own against the LSU offense this season.

We all saw that LSU offense slice and dice defenses all year long, but Dantzler wasn’t having any of it. That would make him a huge get for the KC Chiefs this spring.

The Chiefs secondary has been improved this year, but there’s no guarantee that Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton will play this well again in 2020 and beyond. There’s also a strong possibility that Bashaud Breeland gets a nice contract from another team due to the nice year he had in Kansas City. Kendall Fuller will be a free agent as well, further subtracting from the Chiefs’ secondary in 2020.

The Chiefs will have a late pick in the first round this year and if Dantzler is still sitting there at pick fill in the blank (hopefully 32), Brett Veach would be a fool not to take him there.

What would you think if Cameron Dantzler was the KC Chiefs’ first round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft?
