Why Kansas City Chiefs might look to trade Chris Jones this offseason
By John McCarty
The Chiefs could use more draft picks to replenish roster with young talent.
Much like issues with depth, the best and most efficient way to build that depth is through the draft. Draft picks sign low money deals, which allows the organization to funnel more money toward established veterans and star quarterbacks. As of current, the Chiefs only hold five draft picks in the NFL Draft this April.
Last April, the Chiefs traded away two top picks: a 2019 first round pick and a 2020 second round selection. Could the Chiefs net similar value in a trade of Chris Jones? Perhaps. I don’t want to enter into the discussion of trade value, only to say star players in a trade bring back strong returns in trades.
What should be pointed out is the Chiefs can get strong value and a trade return that would look far different than what they gave up for Clark. If the Chiefs do choose to move Jones, does Brett Veach use the value of Jones to acquire a higher pick in the first round, even if Jones is packaged with existing picks?
Does Veach target quantity of picks – perhaps avoiding the top round pick – instead targeting volume? This is a move that would give Veach the opportunity and freedom to move around the board on draft weekend in what certainly appears to be a deep, but not overly strong draft.
