KC Chiefs: Brett Veach deserves consideration for Executive of the Year
By Kole Berrey
Once Veach set the foundation of the rebuild of the Chiefs defense, he started building the unit up with some big free agent signings and trades.
We will get into the nature of Veach’s trading methods later, which is where we will talk Frank Clark, but here we can take a look at some of the additions Veach made signing players off of the market.
The biggest splash in free agency was obviously Tyrann Mathieu agreeing to sign with the team. The addition of the Honey Badger as a player and a leader have been essential in the overhaul of the team.
Mathieu brings a play style that can only be described as unique to the table. He plays with a tenacity that is almost unmatched, but he also does so in a variety of different roles. This was evident when Mathieu made the All-Pro team at two different positions, safety and defensive back.
The value of Mathieu is also not measured in just his play, but also his leadership and swagger on and off the field. Mathieu wasn’t the only valuable addition to the Chiefs, however, as Veach had a strong free agent class.
Beshaud Breeland has been a solid starter all season for the Chiefs, and provides a veteran presence that was an instant impact on the roster. Damien Wilson was signed to play linebacker for the Chiefs and has done a nice job whenever he sees the field.
Carlos Hyde didn’t ever take the field for the team, but he was a cheap addition that still brought value in the way of a later trade. Overall, Veach was smart with the teams money and built up a roster that can contend for a Super Bowl.
