RANKING EVERY ROYALS SEASON FROM 2010-2019

NUMBER 9: 2019

  • Record: 59-103

Fans were hoping for improvement from their 58-104 record when 2019 rolled around and while they technically did improve on it, it wasn’t by much. The Royals recorded 100 losses for the second straight season, but at least this time there was something to cheer about.

Jorge Soler was front and center in 2019, shattering the single-season home run record for the Royals with 48 bombs. Mike Moustakas had previously broken the record in 2017, but Soler crushed Moustakas’ record of 38 home runs.

Soler was finally healthy in 2019 and showed just how great of a player he can be when at full health. He slashed .265/.354/.569 and played in all 162 games for the first time in his career.

Even though Soler was the storyline, Whit Merrifield once again was the star. He was Kansas City’s lone All-Star representative after slashing .302/.348/.463 and hitting 16 home runs and 74 RBI.

Hunter Dozier had a nice year as well and that was good to see after he was looking like he’d fall in the bust category. Speaking of busts, fans finally got to see Bubba Starling in the big leagues, but he didn’t do all that well in year one.

While the Royals did improve in 2019, it was only by one game. Unlike 2018 though, there were things to follow along with and get excited about in 2019. It was also Ned Yost‘s final season, which made it more special.
