MVP CANDIDATES

Number 3 – Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers has been here from the start, though he has moved up just one spot since heading into week 12. Rodgers wasn’t great in week 14, but he didn’t need to be. This was a typical Rodgers performance against a terrible Washington team. He did just enough, and that has made him stagnant in this column.

The Case For

Rodgers could gain some steam with the narrative of one last MVP trophy in his case. The Packers could be really good and we’ll get to see Rodgers turn it on late. The savvy veteran will most certainly take his play to another level this month.

The Vikings game in a couple weeks will be the primetime game that he must win and put up big numbers in. He’s gaining ground on Russell Wilson and will need him to lose another game or two, which is possible with the Seahawks’ remaining schedule.

The Case Against

Again, this week gave us no clarity on how good the Packers actually are. The Redskins are a trainwreck and they hung around the entire game last week. This could be Rodgers’ passive nature against bad teams, but that will be counted against him if he keeps it up.

While they are the two seed in the NFC, they could still be a wild card team if they lose to Minnesota. That would effectively take Rodgers out of the MVP race unless wild things happen to some other candidates.

MVP Moment:

Week 7 vs. the Raiders – 25/31, 429 yards, 5 touchdowns, win.

“Did he just do that?” Play:

Week 8 touchdown throw to Jamaal Williams in the back of the endzone.
