Kansas State football didn’t get the big name bowl game they might have hoped for – instead they’ll be in the Liberty Bowl – but they have a rare chance to see their opponent play prior to their match-up in three weeks.

The Kansas State Wildcats finished year one of the Chris Klieman era with an 8-4 record and the opportunity to play a 13th game. While the Liberty Bowl isn’t the marquee bowl game that K-State fans were hoping for, being bowl eligible in the first year of a head coach’s tenure is nothing to be ashamed of.

The Wildcats get a unique opportunity this weekend too. Their opponent in the Liberty Bowl (which takes place on New Year’s Eve) is Navy, who is playing in the annual Army-Navy game on Saturday.

Navy, who finished the year at 9-2 and ranked 23rd in the country, squares off against the 5-7 Army team in what’s sure to be a memorable battle once again. While a lot of people will be watching this one for the excitement factor, Kansas State fans will be scouting their Liberty Bowl competition.

More from Kansas State Wildcats

Navy is led by their elusive quarterback Malcolm Perry, who has been turning heads all season long. If any fan base can appreciate a running quarterback, it’s Kansas State, and that’s what they’ll see with Perry in a few weeks. The dude can run.

Perry leads the Shipsmen in rushing yards with 1,500 and rushed for 19 touchdowns. He’s not a skilled passer, throwing for just 1,027 yards and six touchdowns with three picks, but the guy is a lot of fun to watch. This marks the third consecutive year in which Perry has rushed for over 1,000 yards, making him the biggest name to watch come Saturday.

When the Kansas State Wildcats and Navy Shipsmen square off on New Year’s Eve, both offenses are going to rely on their strong run game to get the job done. That’s not a new concept for either team, but Navy does have some impressive defenders, including Jacob Springer who had seven sacks this year.

Kansas State fans should definitely have their eyes glued to this game come Saturday because they can certainly use anything from this Army-Navy game to their advantage come December 31st.

If nothing else, this annual game is always a lot of fun to watch and Malcolm Perry is a sensational player. Maybe the Wildcats will figure out a way to stop him when watching him run all over Army this weekend.

We’ll have to wait and see.
