The KC Chiefs proved they’re still the best team in the AFC West by completely wiping the floor with the Oakland Raiders. What else did we learn about the division this weekend?

All four AFC West teams were back at it this weekend with two divisional battles taking place on Sunday afternoon. Both games were in the later window of games and only one was a meaningful game. The Kansas City Chiefs won the meaningful game over the Oakland Raiders.

Before we get to that game, let’s start with the other game that took place. I know I normally start with the losing teams and then get to the winners, but because this was a week in which the AFC West teams only played each other, we’ll focus on one game first and then shift to the second game.

Let’s get to it.

WHAT DID WE LEARN ABOUT THE CHARGERS?

It’s been a rough year for the Los Angeles Chargers. A team that lost only four games a year ago has now doubled that number and have lost so many close games this year that I almost feel bad for them, but I don’t because sports make all of us bad people sometimes.

The Chargers fell to Denver on Sunday 23-20 and a pass interference call very late in the game helped seal their fate as it put the Broncos in position to score the game winning field goal. Los Angeles had the entire game to make other plays, however, and failed to do so.

It’s looking more and more like Philip Rivers will be on his way out of the Chargers organization after this year. His numbers weren’t necessarily bad, but he certainly isn’t playing the same way he once was. He threw for 265 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception while being sacked three times.

Melvin Gordon had a nice outing, putting up 99 yards on the ground off of 20 carries, so the Chargers have to be happy that he’s at least doing well. Austin Ekeler added 16 rushing yards on the day to give LA over 100 against Denver.

Mike Williams had an awesome game, grabbing five catches for 117 yards, including that insane reception he had near the end of the game to help keep the Bolts afloat. Keenan Allen had six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

The fact that the Chargers pass rush wasn’t able to break through a terrible Broncos offensive line was problematic, especially given the talent the team has. Joey Bosa was nearly invisible in the game.

With the loss, the Los Angeles Chargers drop to 4-8 on the year and will look to bounce back next week against the Jaguars in the late afternoon slate of games. I’d say at least it’s in Los Angeles, but is that really an advantage for them at this point?
