KC Chiefs: Way too early look at potential tight ends in 2020 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
JAKE FERGUSON – WISCONSIN
Jake Ferguson brings toughness and blocking to the tight end position to pair with an ability to work the middle of the field in the passing game. Take everything that was mentioned before on Mitchell Wilcox and reverse it, and to a degree you will get Ferguson.
A redshirt sophomore, if he declares for the draft, Ferguson could be an ideal compliment to Travis Kelce and an intriguing prospect in his own right. The question will be if he declares or returns to school for his junior season.
He comes from a run heavy offense, which is not a surprise coming from Wisconsin. His first responsibility is blocking, so he could be an immediate contributor as a second tight end and even line up at fullback in certain situations.
Anthony Sherman is a free agent after this season and we have to wonder what the Chiefs do with the fullback position. Ferguson does display an ability to get up the field, runs good routes when he gets the opportunity, and displays solid hands.
The biggest question for him will be if he declares for the draft. Thus far in his career, he’s yet to record 1,000 career receiving yards and only has two touchdowns thus far during the 2019 season. His scouting is more trait and projection compared to actual production.
However, for the Chiefs in the middle round, the ability to get immediate depth and contribution from a player that displays the traits to develop into something more could be intriguing, as long as he makes himself available in the draft.
