KC Chiefs: Way too early look at potential wide receivers in 2020 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
DEVONTA SMITH – ALABAMA
Alabama has three wide receivers that could come off the board in the first two rounds, could DeVonta Smith be an interesting option for the Chiefs?
The ‘other’ receivers at Alabama are garnering the headlines in Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs in the early draft process, but Smith has made his fair share of big plays. Maybe none bigger than the reception that clinched the National Title for the Crimson Tide as a true freshman.
Past headlines, Smith is a prospect that could be a superior pro receiver than a college one. That would benefit the Chiefs.
Smith is not quite the athlete of the aforementioned two Alabama prospects, but he is a solid prospect in his own right. He wins often with quickness and route running that perhaps is at or near the top in this draft class.
With good speed, quickness and size, Smith is a prospect who will far outperform his draft spot. With experience running multiple routes, he will be a name to keep an eye on from now until the draft process.
For a quick point, this past Saturday, Smith set the school receiving record for touchdowns in a game, against LSU of all teams. If the Chiefs could get their hands on the Alabama product, based on what they already have at the position, they really could do a lot of damage through the air.
Considering the Chiefs want to win through the air with their quarterback, being really deep and strong at receiver isn’t a luxury, it’s a requirement.
