Kansa City Chiefs: Special teams has rough outing in loss to Titans
After coming up huge a week ago, the Kansas City Chiefs special teams let them down. They lost 35-32 to the Titans, who continue to have this team’s number.
What an absolutely gross and disgusting game for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
Leading with under two minutes to go, the Chiefs had a 3rd and 2, didn’t convert (and that’s a whole other story) and then special teams decided to rear its ugly head. A field goal attempt turned into a disaster for the Chiefs and the Titans were able to get the ball back, go down the field and take the lead with less than 30 seconds remaining.
Then, again, the Chiefs had a chance to kick a late game tying field goal, but the attempt was blocked. What a disgusting display by this unit and something that used to be an incredible strength for the Chiefs have been an ugly weakness this year. That was on full display on Sunday.
With the loss, the Chiefs move to 6-4 and now are just a game ahead of the 5-4 Raiders. Suddenly the AFC West is close again and that’s not something we all thought would be the case a few weeks ago.
The game turned when Reid called a stupid play on 3rd and 2, which set up the field goal that wasn’t. It shows the lack of confidence Reid has in the run game when he opted to have Patrick Mahomes throw it there rather than just hand it off to Damien Williams. That was a dumb, dumb, DUMB play call and I couldn’t believe it when I saw it in real time.
I hate to be dramatic coming off a bad loss (what am I talking about, I love being dramatic), but Super Bowl contenders don’t lose games in the way the Chiefs lost the game on Sunday. This team isn’t there yet. They’re also now two games behind the Ravens and the two-seed probably isn’t happening for the Chiefs unless they win out.
Next up for Kansas City, a trip to Mexico City to play the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football. That game now becomes a must win for this team because suddenly, the Raiders are right on KC’s heels with only a month and a half of games left to play.
What a truly awful ending to a game that should have ended with a Chiefs victory. Disgusting.
