Fantasy Football 2019: Thursday Night Football Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Week 9
By Kole Berrey
Start of the Week: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, San Francisco 49ers
It’s Jimmy G time, bay bay! I LOVE this match up for the former New England Patriot for a couple different reasons. First off, Jimmy Garoppolo has been somewhat of an enigma.
He has only lost two career games as a starter, but in those starts there have been a ton of questions. Is it Garoppolo that has guided the team to these wins, or is it the defense, coaching, running game, etc? Those are fair questions to ask, but when it comes to fantasy football, they are irrelevant.
As a disclaimer, I have always been a Jimmy G believer. Watching him, I think he has that “it” factor to go along with his tangible gifts as a quarterback. That being said, he hasn’t done a whole lot from a fantasy standpoint.
He has one 20 point game under his belt this season, and the rest of the time he has leaned on his running game and defense to take him home. There are a few reasons to expect the case to be different this week.
The first reason is purely from a match up standpoint. The Arizona Cardinals allow the most fantasy points to quarterbacks in the league. That is right, the absolute most. They are surrendering an astounding 24.6 points per game to the position. That number could help win you your week, so look to scoop up Jimmy G, as he is owned in only 32.6% of ESPN leagues.
The second reason I love Garoppolo this week is that he just got a shiny new toy in the form of Emmanuel Sanders. That is a huge boost to a team didn’t have a high caliber wide receiver on their roster.
George Kittle was far and away the best receiver on the team, and he plays tight end. Expect the acquisition to open up this offense even more, and for Kyle Shanahan to find ways to get his newest weapon involved in the offense. It is a perfect recipe for a top QB finish for Jimmy G.
