Prospect Development
Between 2012 -2018, the St. Louis Cardinals saw major roster turnover and prospects like Matt Carpenter, Carlos Martinez, Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller, and Paul DeJong came onto the MLB roster and development into talented players.

Mike Matheny was able to mix rosters complete with veterans and young prospects to remain competitive. He has shown the ability to develop talent at the MLB level and would be an asset in the development of the Royals current roster and incoming prospects looking to break onto the MLB roster in 2021.
The Royals won’t have a win now mentality and players on the roster will be given ample opportunity to develop. If their confidence is shaken, a trip to minors won’t necessarily be a bad thing, as the minor league system for the Royals should be competitive and successful.
Who Matheny retains on his managerial staff, or who he decides to bring in, will be important in the Royals prospects development. A new pitching coach who is capable of adjusting mechanics of lengthy pitchers might be something to pay attention to with the Royals having several tall/lengthy pitching prospects on their way to the majors in the next few years.
Overall
Matheny isn’t the perfect candidate, but if he’s learned from his mistakes he has ability to be successful as the manager of the next competitive Royals roster. He has shown the ability to maximize the performance of his roster, develop talent, and embrace analytics to achieve success.
If he works well with Dayton Moore and they both structure the Royals managerial staff to be a development rich environment, then the Royals will have the managerial foundation in place for success in 2021 and beyond.
Mike Matheny deserves a second chance and he has the potential to be an excellent hire for the Kansas City Royals. He’s a sound tactician and respected leader with a proven pedigree to sustain success.
