The KC Chiefs are fortunate to have a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes, but we’re about to see how valuable a backup quarterback truly is for a team like the Chiefs. Who could they bring in to backup Mahomes next year and beyond?

The backup quarterback is an underrated position in sports. You can go from being a nobody to the most popular person on the team in a matter of weeks. With the Kansas City Chiefs having to turn to Matt Moore until Patrick Mahomes can return, it got me thinking; Who could the Chiefs target to backup Mahomes next year?

Chad Henne, Mahomes’ backup last year and who is on injured reserve at the moment, is slated to be a free agent at season’s end, as is Matt Moore. That means the Chiefs will have to find themselves a new backup before the 2020 season and with this injury to Mahomes, perhaps the team will be determined to find a viable backup option rather than roll with an unknown.

Let’s be clear here – We’ve seen a limited sample size of Matt Moore as a Chief, so this post isn’t a knock on him. In fact, let’s start the options with Moore.

MATT MOORE

As I just noted, we haven’t seen much out of Moore. Maybe he goes out there, lights it up, and keeps the Chiefs right where they need to be in the playoff picture while Mahomes is out. If that’s the case, a lot of other teams might be in on trying to bring Moore in, but hopefully the Chiefs could have the edge there.

Moore could also struggle and the two part ways after the season. Anything is possible, but if Moore does perform well, it wouldn’t be crazy for KC to re-sign him for next year. He will be 36 years old in August, which is another knock on the long-time NFL vet.
