Washington Nationals

Mario Sanchez, RHP Relief Pitcher

Mario Sanchez, the soon to be 25-year-old right-handed starter, had an excellent season at AA, but struggled in his appearances at AAA.

Sanchez put together 113.2 innings of 2.85 ERA, 0.977 WHIP, and 111 Ks at the AA level. Sanchez has put together solid numbers as a starter for his minor league career producing a 3.82 ERA, 1.196 WHIP, and 379 Ks in 468.1 innings of work.

Sanchez has excellent command of his 91-mph fastball, curveball, and change-up throwing them consistently for strikes. Sanchez relies on commanding and mixing his pitches well to keep batters guessing.

As he climbs the ladder and faces more experienced hitters, he may struggle without having premium stuff. Sanchez projects to be decent middle of the bullpen option or a number five type starter (4.50 ERA). Sanchez is Rule 5 draft eligible this offseason and isn’t likely to be added to the Nationals 40-man roster.
