1. It’s Become So Ugly…

There’s a movie from 2011 called Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy that if you haven’t seen it yet, I strongly suggest you do. Great movie and strong performances from guys like Gary Oldman, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Hurt, Tom Hardy, and Mark Strong.

But there’s a part in the movie where Colin Firth’s* character, Bill Haydon, starts talking Western politics. In the book, by  John le Carré (also strongly recommended), Haydon goes a bit more in depth, but Firth gives the line I’m about to talk about a bit more gravitas despite cutting it down. He begins to Oldman’s character, George Smiley, before trailing off, “It’s become so ugly…”

*One of the best actors alive, if you’d be so inclined.

That could apply to a couple of different things about the Chiefs-Texans game, but I’m specifically thinking about the refereeing in the game. Really ugly. I mean, it was outright bad.

Just off the top of my head I’m thinking about

  • a) the missed OPI on Kelce
  • b) the immediate made-up make-up call against Kelce
  • c) the phantom defensive holding call against Bashaud Breeland on a third-down that gave the Texans an automatic first down
  • d) the whole mess surrounding Mahomes’ interception where the refs called pass interference on the Texan defending Kelce before consulting, picking up the flag, and allowing the interception despite Houston not challenging it and Kelce having been mauled like a honey-covered carcass on the play.

The officiating really has become so ugly around the entire league, it’s kind of hard to watch right now.
