6. Thornhill

Rookie Juan Thornhill had a solid game, a rare bright spot for the Chiefs defense. He made a big open-field tackle on a third down before later intercepting a fourth-down heave by Watson. I cannot fault a player–especially such a young one–for making a play on the ball and hauling it in.

Besides, it resulted in a touchback, so get outta here with those he-should-have-just-knocked-it-down takes.

7. Hill’s Extra Efforts

A little more on Hill.

I already talked about his touchdown reception, including his lunge at the end of the play to score. Later, he caught a ball near the sideline just shy of the first-down marker, and instead of going out of bounds, he turned on the jets to burst forward for an extra couple of yards and the first. Even later, he zoomed down field on a reception by Travis Kelce, I believe, and made a block that enabled his teammate to gain some extra yards.

8. Colquitt’s Booming Punt

At the start of the fourth quarter, Dustin Colquitt absolutely destroyed the ball on a 68-yard punt that wound its way out of bounds at Houston’s 7-yard line. With the Chiefs up 24-23 at this point, the Chiefs long-time punter put his defense in great starting position to hold down the lead.

9. The Offense’s First Quarter

Despite all of the penalties, which I’ll get to later, the Kansas City Chiefs put up 17 points in the first quarter on two Mahomes’ touchdown passes and a 41-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. For a team that has struggled to score in the first quarter this season, the 17 points was a welcome change.

10. Low-Key Defenders Making Stops

Looking at you, Reggie Ragland and Daniel Sorensen.

Ragland’s third-down tackle late in the game was the Chiefs first (and only) tackle for loss on the day and put the Chiefs in solid position to get the ball back with a chance to tie the game. And Sorensen’s third-down tackle on tight end Daniel Fells for no-gain came on Houston’s first drive of the second half, halting their drive and forcing them to attempt a 46-yard field goal, which Ka’imi Fairbarn missed.
