BACKUP QUARTERBACK

Chiefs fans could easily make the case that a cornerback fits easier in this spot or that it’s a higher priority. After all, why does Kansas City need a quarterback when they have the best one in the league? The answer is simple – Mahomes needs a better backup.

The Chiefs backup quarterback, Chad Henne, was placed on injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury during the preseason. In light of that injury, the Chiefs then signed veteran quarterback Matt Moore to be the QB2. After spending last season out of football, the career backup quarterback answered the call to join the Chiefs in 2019.

Only starting 30 games in his career, Moore is a mere .500 in win percentage. To imagine Moore stepping in for Mahomes, if need be, wouldn’t give Chiefs Kingdom a lot of confidence moving forward. Could the Chiefs trade for a better backup, even if Henne were to return healthy in the coming weeks?

The Miami Dolphins are in the same position as Washington and Cincinnati in terms of racing towards that number one overall pick. With a first-year head coach, the currently winless Dolphins are a team primed to see some turnover as they rebuild. Even pulling a player away from the quarterback room wouldn’t be out of the question.

During the offseason, the Dolphins brought in veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and then traded for the Cardinals’ 2018 first-round pick, Josh Rosen, during the 2019 draft. Neither quarterback has looked good this year, especially on a particularly bad Dolphins team. With full tank mode seemingly inevitable, the Dolphins should try to get a late-round pick for the 36-year-old Fitzpatrick.

Unfortunately for Fitzpatrick, he has played on some poor teams in recent years, yet at the same time flashing some big potential. If he can do it for some bad teams, imagine what he could do on a good team like Kansas City if need be.

As the Chiefs navigate this treacherous road of injuries, having Fitzpatrick would buy some peace of mind to the backup spot for likely not a huge cost.
