KC Chiefs: Positions that need upgraded before trade deadline

It might seem like the best place to start upgrading is the defense. While there is certainly some merit to that, protecting the team’s most valuable asset should be priority number one. After starting guard Andrew Wylie left with an injury, it was easy to see how limited Mahomes became, especially while fighting his own injury.
With the uncertainty of when Eric Fisher and now Wylie will return, it’d be worth it to upgrade the left side of the line. The Chiefs did bring in Wisnieski to help at guard, but he’s likely only a rental for the rest of this season. Could it be possible to upgrade right now with the future in mind as well?
The Washington Redskins are currently winless and just fired head coach Jay Gruden after five seasons at the helm. Needless to say, this could be a team in the running to pick first in the 2020 draft. It could also be a team willing to give up talented players in order to get the next head coach more draft picks for building the team to their liking.
While it might be a tough sell, Chiefs GM Brett Veach should make a swing for the ‘Skins guard, Brandon Scherff. The 6’5″, 315 pound Scherff is a former first-round pick for Washington in 2015 and had since garnered two Pro Bowl nods.
It has been reported that Scherff and the ‘Skins are far apart on a contract extension and with him becoming a free agent in 2020, now might be the best time for the team to get something in return for him.
It’s likely that Washington would like to retain Scherff to protect their 2019 first-round pick, Dwayne Haskins, as he transitions to become the starter. But they could elect to use draft picks in exchange for him in order to give the next head coach his choice of players to build the team on. It’s hard to know whether or not Scherff is worth a first-round pick but it wouldn’t be totally out of the question.
Since becoming the GM, Veach hasn’t shied away exchanging picks for the players he wants. This would be a good move for this season as well as trying to lock the 27-year-old Scherff down to help protect Mahomes for the future.
This may be a longshot deal, but one that Veach should do his due diligence on.
